Friday afternoon I was startled out of my pre-weekend stupor by a call letting me know multiple fires were burning in the Fern Ridge area, one just a mile north of my house! Fortunately, due to the great work of multiple agencies, all four fires that afternoon were controlled and put out. That led to Sunday's multiple fires near Mapleton. Now there is a suspect in custody for those fires. I can't say enough good things about our local fire departments, ODF's crews, and Lane County's Public Works and Sheriff's staff. So to follow that up the Board had to extend the local public health emergency declaration for COVID, mostly to be able to react to our state government ever-changing requirements for getting CARES Act funds that should have just been passed through to us like Portland.
