  • Open Streets

    07/04/2019 Duration: 11min

My daughter’s school hosted an open streets event in Johannesburg recently. Following on the example of Open Streets – Cape Town, the school decided to try out the concept in Johannesburg. It combined elements of a door-to-door “get to know your neighbours” campaign with a school fete. Spudcaster brings you a sneak peak into the Joburg event. Local universities got on board too! As expected the event made for an entertaining podcast, reflecting the ambiance of the day. The weather was cold and gloomy but it felt like we were tucked away inside someone’s kitchen. It is an amazing concept. It’s a reclaiming of public spaces into safe spaces for play. Charmaine Rayment is a voluntary missionary at Jews for Jesus. Rayment has a real passion for worship ministry. She has agreed to do a monthly podcast set out as series. This is part one in a series documenting The Tabernacle. Notes from this episode Shalom listeners! Over the next few weeks, we are going to go on a journey of Biblical worship. We can learn much about worship by studying the Tabernacle of Moses, the Tabernacle of David and the Psalms. So, let’s begin this journey at the entrance of the Tabernacle of Moses. The one and only entry point to the Tabernacle was the gate and in the same way the one and only entry point to worshiping God is through His Son Jesus (Yeshua). John 14:6 Jesus (Yeshua) said to him, “I am the way, and the truth and the life! No one comes to the Father except through me.” Just as there was one entrance, 1 Tim. 2:5 states that “there is one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all…” Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no o

  • A bump in the knight

    12/02/2019 Duration: 10min

My Uncle Mike is a pillar of his community. I call him the mayor of Boksburg, a quiet mining town east of Johannesburg. Boksburg lies on the flight path to the busy OR Tambo International Airport. The roar of jet engines – that’s what I think of when I think of Reiger Park. But more about Uncle Mike. His family often jokes that when he ultimately kicks the bucket, they will keep the funeral hush hush (because there isn’t a hall big enough to accommodate all those mourners!). He had a close shave recently. An accidental reunion, if you will. During the struggle, he rubbed shoulders with who would become a political big wig. In the union trenches, a comrade and friend, Gwede Mantashe. They both hail from what was then known as the turbulent east rand townships. And they both still call it home today. As fate would have it, these old friends would meet up again post democracy. Well, they more or less bumped into each other. At Baobulb.org we aim to tell the quintessential South African stories. • Ouma Titties

    04/09/2018 Duration: 42min

This podcast first appeared on the Sound Africa website, titled De Bijbel. My journey into exploring my own family tree began with the story of Krotoa . I quite stumbled on the tale of my own mysterious ancestor. All I had to go on was the name “Ouma Titties” and the idea that she may have been of Zulu ancestry. And so began my quest for my lost Zulu ancestor. Along the way I stumbled upon an old Dutch bible, which recorded my limited family tree. This is the foundational podcast for my website. I work in the news media industry, radio is my lifeblood. Marketing, not so much! This website is my attempt at growing an audience for podcasts in South Africa. It is a largely unexplored arena in South Africa and I hope that I can make a dent on the market somehow. My focus is radio type documentary podcasts (far less than that passes for a podcast in SA today). Transcript

  • CAn’t Diss

    02/03/2018 Duration: 05min

During my career as a journalist, I kept coming back to the same story. Statelessness. The idea that one does not exist unless one has a witness to one’s birth. It is an idea that has persisted through millenia. If I choose to travel and I arrive at a place first, then it belongs to me. Birth of the number. Call it slavery. Colonisation. Apartheid. Spatial planning. It is based on the assumption that one life is of more value than another. I dress this way, speak this way, choose to socialise this way, and therefore my way is the best way. Actually, no one cares that you conquered a mountain. You chose to do it. Wherever you are, there you’ll be Human beings with the potential to be anything and everything they ever wanted, limit themselves daily. One human being might dream to conquer mount everest. Another will become the richest person in the world. These are simply lives well lived. You have the potential to achieve great things. Instead, you choose to compete with other human beings. • Women’s Month

    27/09/2017 Duration: 05min

It’s womens month in SA. I choose to reflect on a powerful historic figure who helped shape the land we know today. A Khoe woman named Krotoa was one of the first local people to interact with Jan van Riebeeck – the Dutch colonial administrator who founded Cape Town. Krotoa was Van Riebeeck’s interpreter, and was instrumental in ending the first Khoi Khoi-Dutch war. This is one of my favourite pieces. The SABC broadcast this story in 2017. By far one of my most formidable interviews was with the then outgoing Deputy Chief Justice, Dikgang Moseneke. It is also one of my proudest stories, compiled for SABC Radio. I have reproduced it on the Spudcaster page.
