Come along with me, Shaun Newman, as I track down unique stories centered around current & past athletes. I am a former Junior A, Division 3 hockey player. I spent a short cup of coffee in Finlands Suomi Sarja League and in 2006 biked across Canada. I currently play Senior for the Hillmond Hitmen in the SaskAlta Hockey League.Believe life is an adventure and everyone has a unique story to tell. Here we will try and uncover some of those stories.

Played for the Red Deer Rebels where in his final season he led the WHL in scoring with 120pts in 70 games & earned the league award for Most Valuable Player. The Rebels that year would go onto win the WHL championship & the Memorial Cup. Justin was drafted in 1999 by the New York Islanders and from 2001 -2012 he spent time between the NHL, AHL & Europe.

He played 4 years for the Prince George Cougars, spent 3 1/2 seasons in the East Coast & finally came back to Lloydminster where he would help the Border Kings capture the 2007 Allan Cup. Although a Calgary Flames fan had an absolute blast with Aaron. I should point out his draft year he was ranked in the top 125 by central scouting and his story about how he was not entered into the NHL entry draft will stop you in your tracks. Enjoy.

11/03/2020 Duration: 02h03sBorn in Mayfair SK, he played his minor hockey in North Battleford before heading to the Moose Jaw Warriors at the age of 15. He spent 5 years in the WHL which culminated in WHL championship with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He spent two years playing CIS with the U of S Huskies and then headed down south 5 years in the ECHL. He won a Kelly Cup with the South Carolina Stingrays & spent 8 years overseas mainly in the British Elite League. He now owns & operates Trig Energy Services.

He played 3 years for the Div 1 University of Findlay & a year with Niagara University. Played 3 years of pro for the Wichita Thunder which ended with a trip to the CHL finals with the Colorado Eagles. Since being back in Lloydminster he has been a volunteer Assistant coach with the Lloydminster Bobcats. Ep. 58 Red Deer Rebels, Minor Leagues & Germany - Greg Schmidt
26/02/2020 Duration: 02h54minOriginally from North Battleford SK. Greg was undrafted but found a way onto the Red Deer Rebels. He spent 3 seasons there putting up back to back seasons of 90+ points. After his junior career he travels from Quebec of the IHL to South Carolina, Colorado & Pee Dee of the ECHL. He won a Kelly Cup while with South Carolina and talks of the journey & shenanigans that happen in life in the minor leagues. He finally spent 8 years playing in Germany where both of his kids ended up starting school & playing their sports. FInally he gives a lot of credit to his wife Sarah who all through his journey was by his side. Pretty cool story. Thanks again Greg.

Ep. 57 Tampa Bay Lightning Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting - Darryl Plandowski
19/02/2020 Duration: 02h06minThis was a very cool episode. Darryl played for the Lloydminster Lancers back in the 80's when they were still apart of the SJHL. While with the Lancers he posted a franchise record 121 points in a single season. He played 4 years NCAA Division 1 with the Northern Michigan Wildcats where he would win a national championship. He spent 6 years with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL 2 as an assistant coach & 4 more as the head scout. Since then he has spent 22 years in the NHL scouting: 8 with the Buffalo Sabres, 2 with the Pittsburgh Penguins & currently in his 12th year with the Tampa Bay lightning.

12/02/2020 Duration: 02h14minHe spent time with the Saskatoon Blades, Swift Current Broncos & finally the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL. With Moose Jaw he set a team record with 70 goals in 71 games. He was drafted 52 overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He was also selected in two different expansion drafts first by the Ottawa Senators in 1992 & then by the Nashville Predators in 1998. His first real opportunity to play in the big league came with the St. Louis Blues who were coached by Joel Quenneville with star players such as Hull, Pronger & MacInnis.
