  • Geopolitical risks from the Middle East | February 2020

    11/02/2020 Duration: 09min

In this episode we will be discussing the geopolitical risks from the Middle East.2020 started out with a bit of volatility coming from the Middle East. We had the US assassinate major general Qasem Soleimani, he was the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Baghdad Airport. The Iranians they responded with some missile strikes at the US but this was really calibrated to appease some of their anti-us sentiment at home. The end result was that there was no US casualties of sorts, so at least there was no knee-jerk reaction by the Iranians on some sort of oil fields or energy facilities. If that had happened then we would see a spike in the ore Price, but that did not happen. So although the we had this strike it didn't have any sort of lasting impact. *** Head to our website to read the full episode show notes:https://smithandwilliamson.com/en/insights-landing/sw-the-pulse/investment-show/?utm_source=simplecast&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=thepulse *** View and subscribe to our monthly Investmen

    06/02/2020 Duration: 11min

Our sports and media podcast series hosted by Peter Fairchild our tax partner and head of our sports, media and entertainment group and Ed Duah, former football player and now football adviser, will provide you with information on various topics that will affect sports and media professionals in all stages of their career, including Insurance, image rights, legal matters, tax liability, wealth planning, and preparing for life after sport or entertainment.Unlike other professions, the sports, media and entertainment industry is volatile, with sports professionals in particular facing a limited earning capacity due to the average length of their career, compared to those who will work for a longer period of time. For example a professional footballer may have a maximum of 10 years at the height of their career, compared to an office worker who can work into their 60’s earning a steady income. An office worker could have a couple of difficult years with their financial planning and it wouldn’t make too much diff

  • Review of 2019 and look ahead to 2020

    24/01/2020 Duration: 12min

*2019 was a buoyant year for most equity and fixed income markets perhaps surprisingly actually given the mood at the beginning of the year, but what were the main drivers of this success? *Well firstly let's look at 2019. In terms of the performance global equities were up 27% and you wouldn’t have guessed that if you looked at the earnings because earnings steadily decelerated throughout that year, and in fact there was virtually no earnings growth at all in 2019. The key driver was the Federal Reserve and other major central banks by loosening in terms of interest rates by increasing the size of their balance sheets and reversing the tightening policies that we saw at the back end of 2018. These were the key market drivers going into 2019 plus it's also worth bearing in mind that the trade protections and rhetoric that started off in 2018 and continued into early 2019, towards the back end of 2019 we saw President Trump has dialled back some of that trade protection rhetoric and indeed we might get a trade

  • It's all about earnings and growth in 2020 | December

    11/12/2019 Duration: 12min

In this episode we will be discussing the year just gone, the labour manifesto and Chinese growth.Since the futures market expects the Fed to cut interest rates just once in 2020, investors will be looking at company earnings and dividends to sustain the equity rally. On the positive side, after a sharp slowdown in global manufacturing activity in 2019, there are tentative signs of stabilisation.According to the Resolution Foundation, the Labour party manifesto envisages government spending (day-to- day and capital investment) of 45% of GDP by 2023/24, up from 40% currently, and would be the largest expenditure (excluding the Global Financial Crisis in 2008) by any government since the mid-1970s.China’s latest round of monthly macro statistics have been greeted with some gloom. Certainly, on the surface, the data appears disappointing. While industrial production grew +4.7% in October from a year ago and retail sales expanded by +7.2%, both data points were below consensus expectations. For many, this has bee

  • Rising risk of a progressive left US Democratic presidential candidate | November

    11/11/2019 Duration: 10min

In this episode we will be discussing US politics and Brexit. The launch of a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump is also changing the race for the Democrat nomination. Rumours about his son’s activities in the Ukraine have left former frontrunner, Joe Biden, flagging, leaving left-winger Elizabeth Warren to take the reins. This is a risk for the US equity market. Warren has strong views on corporate excess and is promising far-reaching reform for the healthcare, technology and energy industries. These are major components of the S&P 500.In the UK, the risk of a no-deal Brexit appears to be fading, following Boris Johnson’s new Withdrawal Agreement. While the December election introduces new risks, the UK’s departure with a deal should draw investors back to the UK.
