Why do people snore?  It's not just annoying, it carries real health risks. Snoring is caused by the relaxation of the tissue in your mouth and throat. Specifically the palate and uvula.  This can block the airway and flap around as you breath.  That makes the snoring sound. There are a few things that can provoke snoring.  Laying on your back might trigger it as your tongue slides back.  Obesity can bring snoring because you get a lot of extra tissue around your neck. Drugs and alcohol can play a role because they can relax the tissue even further. Some of the health risks of snoring include sleep deprivation and oxygen deprivation. Some studies also show an increased risk of stroke and damage to your arteries due to the vibration.
