How many of us really appreciate the gift that Our Blessed Lord has given us of Himself in the Holy Eucharist. How many of us realise that we do not receive something in the Eucharist. We do not receive bread in the Eucharist, nor do we receive wine in the Eucharist, we do not receive any created thing in the Eucharist. In the Eucharist, we receive someone. We receive a Person, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity Who said, “Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life. Whoever eats Me lives in Me and I in him. My Flesh is real food, My Blood real drink. He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood lives in Me and I will raise him up on the last day as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father , so whoever eats Me will live because of me.” In all of this, there is no suggestion that we’re receiving something, but we are receiving Someone.
