Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a major backer of the House’s “Green New Deal,” hailed the movement, tweeting, “Activism disrupts the present to change the future.” The climate change movement has captured the passion of the younger generation, created urgency, and forced the issue onto the political agenda. For these reasons, we have much to learn from them. The fact is, historically, social reformers have often used civil disobedience and other non-violent disruptive tactics to draw attention to injustice. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s prolife activists under the auspices of Operation Rescue disobeyed authority and blocked the doors of abortion facilities to save children and draw attention to child killing.
