On January 23rd 2017 Charlie Devlin, The former Chief Executive Officer of Daytop Village, Inc. passed away after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. We lost another warrior in the battle against Substance Abuse.  Today we’re going to play an edited replay of a show from November 25TH, 2014, The 2Nd of a three part series covering the birth and evolution of Daytop. In this show we interviewed Charlie to get his perspective of his Daytop experience both as a client and as an employee. We do this in his honor and memory. We hope you enjoy it.

Show Topic:  You could've heard the collective GASP, when Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) was introduced into the main stream treatment culture about 15 years ago. The backlash was predictable and not entirely without merit. We'll discuss this transition and the culture change that has ensued...albeit begrudgingly. We'll also talk about what these Medications are that are being used, the best practices that make their use effective, AND the realities of MAT within the residential treatment environment. Show Topic: We are not Doctors. So, we are not going to get deep into the clinical aspects of Depressions itself. What we will discuss are the various types of depression we see in the treatment environment, the most common, and some therapeutic interventions that are engaged. We will also touch on the historical aspect of Mental Health treatment "injecting" itself into the subsance abuse treatment environment and how that has changed treatment moving forward. We've discussed how Anger, a secondary feeling, more often than not, occupies a primary slot, thereby blocking, delaying, or distorting the ultimate resolution of issues for which Anger is on the menu of feelings one may have and continue to experience. Show Topic:  TRUST! Essential to one's success during the recovery process, relationships, and life in general. However it is probably the most often used "excuse" by those in the first trimester of recovery, for why they don't engage in the treatment process. "I don't trust" is a familiar retort when a client is questioned about their lack of involvement or sharing in the group process, and or one to one with their peers. Show Topic: California was the first State to be issued a Federal waiver to develop a pilot Managed Care System for substance abuse treatment using Medicaid dollars. Our County (San Mateo), is the first County in the State to have its pilot plan approved by the Feds and the State. The County plan is called the ODS (Organized Delivery System). In this two part series we'll discuss how the ODS will change substance abuse treatment as we know it. Show Topic:  Daytop's Staff Training Program was outstanding. It was intellectually rigorous. Your "mastery" of the concept had to be proven literally and figuratively. But that is NOT what made it outstanding. It was the emotional and mental paces you were put through to access what they believed was a more important determination. We'll leave that hanging for discussion. Today, professional and para-professional counselors operate under organizational and licensing board imposed code of ethics in order to protect clients, but those boundaries are sometimes crossed directly and indirectly, ultimately causing unnecessary harm, to the one we've commited to helping.  The Client.
