Black Love is the Whigs second masterpiece in a row and they would never be as dark or foreboding again.  Where Gentlemen was intimate and desperate, Black Love is grand and demanding.  It’s the soundtrack to a Film Noir / Blaxploitation mashup, a world where secrets and betrayal are set to a Wah Wah pedal and there’s no discerning anger, desperation or triumph. Swiz is one of the great, lost DC Hardcore bands of the late 80’s/early 90’s.  While plenty of ink has been spilt about their neighbors, Soul Side, Shudder to Think, Scream and of course, Fugazi. Swiz seems largely forgotten to time save for singer Shawn Brown’s notoriety as Dag Nasty's pre Can I Say front man.  None of their output is currently available on the music streaming services so wanting to hear the band today takes some effort (thanks to those dedicated fans who have uploaded their records to YouTube).  All a shame really as even after all these years and hundreds of bands playing this same style later, the bands’s 1988 self-titled LP still packs a wallop.  Clocking in at just over twenty minutes, it’s a fierce, tight testament to what this music was always supposed to be, urgent, exciting and to the point.  

There is an argument to be made that outside of the geographically named baseball bats, Slint's “Spiderland” is the greatest thing to ever come out of Louisville Kentucky.  The bands six song LP is not only their high-water mark but it has more than stood the test of time by remaining an incredibly compelling and emotional listen all these decades later as well as being a major influence on the likes of Shellac, Mogwai and Godspeed You! An urban infant on a rodent killing spree, a pregnant woman with an opaque enhancement for fetus viewing and of course “frogs heads and midgets going oingo boingo” are all among the cretins that inhabit our topic for episode 171.   Are the lyrics on GBH’s second LP ridiculous?  Without question.  Does the album rule nonetheless? We kick off 2022 with Thrash Metal ground zero and a nostalgic discussion of Metallica’s debut.  It’s no exaggeration to say that this record changed our lives in 1983.  It introduced us to a whole new world of Metal & Punk, prompted us to form our own thrashy garage band (shouts to Nemesis) and is at least partially responsible for us starting this podcast.
