Last season, Clay-Chalkville defeated Oxford in the quarterfinals to hand the Yellow Jackets their lone loss of 2017\. Oxford returns to Cougar Stadium with the goal of grabbing a first-round home playoff date while Clay seeks the same with each team's lone loss coming to Pinson Valley.

Mountain Brook pulled off the stunner over Hewitt-Trussville last week to announce their presence in the region title picture. Now the Spartans look to set up a title showdown with Hoover next week. Thompson aims to muddy up the title picture even more by giving Mountain Brook their first loss with Hewitt-Trussville awaiting next week.

Both the Eagles and Aggies sit at 3-1 in region play. With Mortimer Jordan in firm control of the region title, this is the first of a three-game in three weeks slate also involving Central-Clay County to see who will also host a first round playoff game in November.

It's simple: winner of this game takes control of 7A Region 3\. But this game doesn't guarantee the winner a title with big games still ahead. Hewitt's offense looks to shred another defense on their path to a third straight region championship while Mountain Brook may bring the best defense Hewitt has faced since Week 0.

Winner takes control of 5A Region 5 with Sylacauga and Center Point possibly still in the hunt if Central-Clay County can pull off the road upset. Mortimer Jordan seeks to up their five-game winning streak and get a two-game advantage on the region title race with wins already over Center Point and Sylacauga.

The Yellow Jackets come in unbeaten off a second shutout on the year. Paul Bryant hopes to stay in the 6A Region 4 title race with Hueytown still left on both teams' slates.

A close rivalry renews as the Bulldogs are off to their best start in over a decade while Oneonta wants to show they're back to being the Redskins of old.

Both Central and Jasper sit at 3-1 on the season but look to stand out from the pack as a contender to Etowah in the northern half of Class 5A.

With Hewitt the only other team without a region loss, either Vestavia Hills or Mountain Brook will be either the only or one of two teams at the top of 7A Region 3 by the midpoint of the season.

No rest for the weary as Pinson Valley, fresh off a thrilling win over rival Clay-Chalkville, travels east to take on another Top 5 6A Region 6 foe in Oxford.

These two, along with Ranburne, look to be the best in 2A Region 6\. Ohatchee gets their first crack at a big name in recent 2A history after dropping back from 3A. Cleveland seeks to restore themselves as region champions after a missed opportunity last year.

With a win in Trussville Friday, Hoover will be in the driver's seat to their 12th region title since 2001\. Hewitt-Trussville could create chaos in the Region 3 title race by upsetting the Bucs at home with a game at Thompson set for late October.

The top-ranked Lions out of Class 5A have struggled scoring in their jamboree and first regular season contest. Week 2 has served them well the last two years. but they didn't have this stiff a challenge. Pleasant Grove has taken Briarwood to the edge each of their last two region meetings, but the Spartans have lost eight straight in the series since winning the first meeting in 1994.

Pelham is off to their first 2-0 start in five years and could get their first state Top 10 ranking since 2008 with a win over Homewood. The Patriots are coming off a tough, weather-driven 17-10 loss at Vestavia Hills but have not lost to Pelham since 2011.

The Wildcats break in a new coach in Don Dover as Fultondale searches for answers on making a deeper run in the Class 3A playoffs. Maplesville comes in off an uncharacteristic quarterfinal loss in the 1A playoffs and look to establish their claim to dominance once again by going through a higher class power.
