In todays landscape most if not all programs are Dual Diagnosed or Co-occuring capable. Join us as we discuss the role mental health treatment has played in the successful recovery from substance abuse for many individuals. It wasn't always so. The integration of mental health into mainstream substance abuse treatment was not a smooth one. There were (still are) difficulties with traditional treatment program staff accepting, and understanding mental health treatment. The stigma attached to having a mental health disorder contributes to client reluctance to fully engage in the assessment process. Every now and then we have to interrupt our normal programming and our daily lives for a good old fashion House Meeting. I've been simmering and brooding for a while with some issues that need to be addressed, and since the issues are not directed towards a particular person or persons, we call a House Meeting instead of the TC General Meeting. Show Topic: When parents are in the throes of their addiction it is no secret that their children suffer. Children of all age groups experience the effects of their parent's addiction, probably the older they are the worse the experience, with elementary and high school age probably being the worst group.  Resuming that parent - child relationship is not as easy as getting off drugs and jumping back into their lives. Its a process and some parents in recovery forget..............that its not all about YOU!  We'll discuss this process and ways to make that re-entry smoother. Show Topic:  There are those at various points of their recovery who think, or even fantasize about certain negative things they can continue to engage in while they are trying to take part in the recovery process. The thinking that facilitates these ideas range from simple ignorance to outright idiocy. Show Topic:  We, as treatment providers, preach over and over, that you must talk, talk, talk, share, share, share, purge, purge, purge. Simple enough. So simple, its hard. Its not enough to just talk, share, and purge. We must speak to our feelings. Identify them. Articulate them. Attach them to people, places, things, and experiences.  The eternal question in treatment, and even post treatment: How does that make you feel? Must be answered, and answered properly.  Today, we try and get in touch (not touchy feely), with our feelings, so that, that question can be answered. Show Topic:  Throughout the substance abuse treatment and recovery field the issue of relationships, relationships while in the midst of treatment, relationships after treatment, and when is the right time, continue to be a subject of considerable debate. Is there a general understanding and agreement that providers abide by or does it depend on the whims of the provider, the modality, or the milieu? Show Topic:  The New Year presents an opportunity for A Fresh Start, A New Attitude, New Thoughts, Change, Moving Forward. All positive concepts. Easier to conceive, harder to implement. A number of official and unofficial unwritten philosophies come into play, such as: Honesty, Trust, There's nothing constant but change, No Free Lunch, It is Better to Understand, Than to be Understood, and Blind Faith. We've purposely left one out, which is the genesis of our New Years Show Edition: FORGIVENESS.  Forgiveness of one's self and or others for misdeeds or offenses, is extremely critical for progress in treatment and recovery, yet, it is often one of the most difficult to implement.
