Today we give thanks for a woman of valor. We give thanks for Rachel Held Evans, for her courage, for her witness, for her laughter. Today we give thanks for all who have mothered and midwifed our faith.

This morning’s Forum featured the Rev. Beth Scriven and leaders from The Rockwell House, our campus ministry partners. “Discernment: who are we called to be as community, who are we called to be as individuals?” Great questions at all phases of life, but especially for college students.

Mike makes a case for god parenting as a practice in faith, with help from Harry Potter.

The Revs Mike Angell and Laurie Anzilotti lead a discussion about climate change, social justice, and environmental racism, looking at how human driven climate change disproportionally impacts US communities of color. Mike also looks specifically at the critical kidney disease epidemic among impoverished farm workers in El Salvador as a more subtle impact of climate change.

Don’t let God’s name be defined by hate and fear. The world needs more generous words about God. The God we speak of, the One we pray to in this place, our God blesses life in all its diversity. God works for liberation for ALL people. The world needs more words about the God of forgiveness and love, the God who invites us to grow up. Say the word “God.”

When we speak of God, we speak of the loving, life-giving, liberating force behind all of creation. We speak of the one who works behind the scenes, through unlikely characters and burning bushes. We speak of a God who invites us to look beyond our own understanding, to seek the God just beyond our understanding.

The rector preaches the first in a series of sermons asking the question; "What do we mean when we say the word God?" After a week like this one, remembering the victims of violence from mosques in New Zealand: When we say we believe in the God of Abraham, the God of Sarah, we also must know that we claim the God of Hagar. Our God is not a narrow tribal God. Our One God is capable of mercy, and justice, and love not just for one group, but for all of humanity.

When Jesus is named as a "Spirit-filled" leader, it places him in an emotional place. In the desert Jesus is cut off from the resources of nature and society. What he does with this vulnerability changes the world.
