  • EP227: Public Enemy "Yo! Bum Rush the Show"

    17/06/2023 Duration: 01h36min

1987 was a watershed year for Hip Hop.  It saw the debut albums from Ice-T, NWA & the Posse, Boogie Down Productions and Eric B & Rakim.  All are certifiable classics but it was Public Enemy’s debut that was sonically the most adventurous.  The beeps and wails of the Bomb Squads production coupled with Chuck D's booming baritone and Flavor Flav’s enticing prompts was unlike anything that had come before (or anything since).  The militant stance projected in the Black Panther inspired cover photo wasn’t wholly present in Chuck's lyrics yet (that would come fully formed on their sophomore LP a year later) but all the pieces were in place to make PE one of the most important acts in the genres history.     RIP Cormac McCarthy RIP Chris Hassett  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:   EP17:  “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/03/20/ep17-public-enemy-it-takes-a-nation-of-millions-to-hold-us-back/   EP224:  Living Colour “Vivid” https://huntsmanhill.com/2

  • EP226BS: Black Sabbath "The Mob Rules"

    11/06/2023 Duration: 01h11min

"If you listen to the HHPP the Mob Rules!!!"  The best post Ozzy Sabbath album hands down (yes, that includes Heaven & Hell). Don’t agree?  Listen to Mike and Big Daddy Dave make the case.    RIP Ronnie James Dio RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:    EP222BS:  “Heaven and Hell” https://huntsmanhill.com/2023/05/14/ep222bs-black-sabbath-heaven-and-hell/   EP25:  Metallica VINYL CAGE MATCH “Ride the Lightning" vs "Master of Puppets”    https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/05/14/ep25-metallica-vinyl-cage-match-ride-the-lightning-vs-master-of-puppets/   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.

  • EP225: Supersuckers "La Mano Cornuda"

    04/06/2023 Duration: 01h23min

A very special episode of the HHPP that begins as a discussion about one of Rodney’s all-time favorite records and evolves into an examination of that mysterious quality in music that gives it the power to touch us each in unique and unexplainable ways.  One of our most personal episodes yet.   RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:   EP45:  Supersuckers “The Evil Powers of Rock N Roll” https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/12/02/ep45-supersuckers-the-evil-powers-of-rock-n-roll/   Zeke https://open.spotify.com/artist/7HvjR3M6xzluBLTnioRzvu?si=P4MxUUaFRtaBEReYX0Lzgw     Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRwAcademy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.c

  • EP224: Living Colour "Vivid"

    28/05/2023 Duration: 01h12min

Living Colour were (are?) a capital “R” rock band without the benefit (or hinderance) of any of the sub-genre designations assigned to many of their peers.  Songs like “Desperate People” and the massive hit “Cult of Personality” had driving, high-energy verses and soaring, singable chorus’ that were primed for drive time radio.  What separated them from those peers were their insane, Berklee level chops and the fact that they were four African Americans who wrote songs about real life challenges including racial stereotypes, the damages of gentrification and the crack epidemic. Their debut album was groundbreaking upon its release in 1988 but how does it hold up today?       RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:   EP154:  Fishone “Truth and Soul” https://huntsmanhill.com/2021/05/16/ep154-fishbone-truth-soul/   “Memories Can’t Wait” https://open.spotify.com/track/6ZkdsPHBRDlzK5VjWDgByG?si=73c881d1c5b049f5   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/

  • EP223: The Cure "Faith"

    21/05/2023 Duration: 01h46min

The Cure’s third long player doubles down on the despair that began with 1980’s “Seventeen Seconds” and would culminate on 1982’s “Pornography.” Of the three “Faith” feels the most personal to singer songwriter Robert Smith as the increasingly personal lyrics detail a world of a drowning man whose doubt of his own faith increases as other voices interrupt his primary colored world seeing all cats  turning to grey during the holy hour of a funeral party dedicated to his grandparents passing.  Good pal Dave Lutes joins us to dissect it all.      RIP Frank Kozik  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:   HHPP EP189:  Seventeen Seconds https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/08/28/ep189-the-cure-seventeen-seconds/   “Carnage Visors” https://open.spotify.com/track/58ixPhF0Ib5ehj0x

  • EP222BS: Black Sabbath "Heaven and Hell"

    14/05/2023 Duration: 01h21min

Big Daddy Dave joins the show for the first in a series of episodes dedicated to each of Black Sabbath's post Ozzy records.  We of course begin with the Ronnie Jame Dio’s first album with the band, “heaven and Hell."  In addition to its classic title track there’s a lot to like here but is it really a Black Sabbath album?  We discuss.      RIP Ronnie James Dio RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:    EP32:  The Complete Black Sabbath Discography (the Ozzy Years) https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/07/09/ep32-black-sabbath-complete-discography/   Black Sabbath w/ Rob Halford  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHyUyPPipJw&t=741s   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?s

  • EP221: Dead Kennedys "Plastic Surgery Disasters"

    07/05/2023 Duration: 01h13min

Topics include government induced pandemics, suburban homes turned into yuppy prisons, blindly trusting self-appointed authorities, getting swept up in the crazed adrenaline of an angry mob and corporate surveillance.  1982 or 2022?      RIP D.H. • EP220: Punk Rock Festival Auction

    30/04/2023 Duration: 01h16min

Booking a compelling music festival is tough.  You need the right venue, a good range of bands and your headliner is crucial to the events financial success.  So, if you had to curate your own Punk Rock fest with a ten band lineup and a limited budget, how would you go about it?  Would you focus on more affordable, up and coming acts or would you lean into legacy bands that tug on the nostalgia of an audience with deeper pockets?  Our philosophies differ but the results offer three interesting fantasy options for the 2023 festival goer.    LINK TO EPISODE IN BIO   RIP Bob Nalbandian   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates

  • EP219: Motörhead "Overkill"

    19/04/2023 Duration: 01h26min

Most people would identify “Ace of Spades” as Motörhead’s classic LP and they’re not wrong.  In fact, the band released six classics in a row starting with their self-titled 1977 debut but it’s really “Overkill” that honed the sound that would unite Metalheads and Punks and influence thousands of bands from every possible subgenre.  From Discharge to Metallica, extreme music would simply not sound the same without Lemmy, “Fast" Eddie Clarke and “Filthy” Phil (The Animal) Taylor and there’s no more sonic proof than their sophomore LP.    RIP Lemmy RIP Fast Eddie Clarke RIP Phil Taylor  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:    EP134:  Motörhead Ace of Spades  https://huntsmanhill.com/2020/08/17/ep134-motorhead-ace-of-spades-soundtrack-to-the-apocalypse-vol-20/    Anot

  • EP218: The Knitters "Poor Little Critter on the Road"

    16/04/2023 Duration: 01h17min

X always had elements of Americana and Country on the edges of their music but never as straight forward or overt as when they swapped their legendary guitar player Billy Zoom for another LA legend (Dave Alvin of the Blasters) and changed their name to the Knitters.  Half of the songs on their debut are covers but they fit so neatly alongside the John Doe / Exene Cervenka originals that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it was recorded.  It’s a timeless sound for sure, but how does it hold up on 2023?   RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:    Marty & Elayne  https://www.thedresden.com/event/marty-elayne/   Serge Gainsbourg Aux Armes Et Caetera  https://open.spotify.com/album/20iIOE0SiJEVa8LpkMfN3B?si=BuburO_dQiWH-IjdrzRpkg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcas

    09/04/2023 Duration: 01h05min

  • EP216: Dark Angel "Darkness Descends"

    02/04/2023 Duration: 01h09min

Dark Angel’s second LP was released in 1986, the zenith of Thrash Metal and the same year as “Master of Puppets,” “Reign in Blood,” “Peace Sells..” and dozens of other classics of the genre.  It didn’t leave the same scars that many of those other LPs did at the time but how does this cacophony of Slayer inspired riffage hold up in 2023?  Pretty damn well actually.    RIP Jim Durkin RIP Donald Runyon  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:    We Have Arrived https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpRpNQJGvL4   Academy O.C. • EP215AW: The Afghan Whigs "1965"

    26/03/2023 Duration: 54min

Despite its party vibe, “1965” was the Afghan Whigs breakup album.  The move to a new record label (Columbia), lackluster sales and a less than spectacular tour with Aerosmith that would culminate in a coma inducing 2x4 to the head in an Austin Texas bar bathroom would prove too much for the band.  Though they would emerge triumphant to reunite in in 2006, “1965” for a time was their final salvo and what a gloriously debaucherous time it was.  #solopod!        RIP Bob Nalbandian    Recommended Listening:   EP185AW:  The Afghan Whigs Black Love https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/07/31/ep185aw-the-afghan-whigs-black-love/   Live At the Howlin’ Wolf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUFDfpVvXzU   Moon Maan  https://open.spotify.com/album/0pUyXByJ9TjelPxVD9OBy5?si=8EQr3lOhTxO6wXWXb2SwIA   huntsmanhill.com #huntsmanhill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://manhuntsman.com Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.ba

  • EP214: Fake Names "Expendables"

    20/03/2023 Duration: 51min

Is the sum greater than (or ever equal to) the parts?  In this case, Fake Names is the sum and the parts are Refused, Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Embrace, One Last Wish, Soulside, Girls Against Boys and Fugazi.  It’s a tall order to be sure and the supergroup pulls from some varied influences, some more expected than others.  How close do they get to their lineage.  We discuss (without surprisingly little debate).         RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening    Killer Be Killed  https://open.spotify.com/artist/4JNF6YOUi69O4zAdwQVGLY?si=YxnUITtMS6ijnOA2N7pLcQ   Minor Victories  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2ZDbs6Ag5GT53kdeY1ciTx?si=x1u7DduaSUOsFyC6JJSG_A   Bloc Party Silent Alarm https://open.spotify.com/album/0urhQCsjpczjC8zbTMtd8t?si=l6pXhj9LTQyPaFB4jqRHgA   One Last Wish 1986 https://open.spotify.com/album/3mITKV283MWEgyQz7p242N?si=01uHQ2e3R8WGhfV6N5h-kA   Ghost “Square Hammer” https://open.spotify.com/track/2XgTw2co6xv95TmKpMcL70?si=b02e46f2fe27498a   manhuntsman “Glass Hammer” https://open.spo

  • EP213: Reevaluation - Ratt "Out of the Cellar" - Is this album actually greatt?

    12/03/2023 Duration: 01h23min

Part two of our Reevaluation Series where we review an album that we loved in our youth and turned violently against as we became mature music snobs to ask:  Is This Album Actually Great?  This time its Ratt’s 1984 debut “Out of the Cellar.”  The answer might surprise you, unless of course you’ve heard this album before (then the answer is obvious).    RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening    EP140:  Reevaluation - W.A.S.P. - Is this album actually great? https://huntsmanhill.com/2020/10/12/ep140-re-evaluation-w-a-s-p-is-this-album-actually-g-r-e-a-t/   EP93:  Mötley Crüe Too Fast For Love https://huntsmanhill.com/2019/03/10/ep93-motley-crue-too-fast-for-love/   huntsmanhill.com huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://op

  • EP212: Agnostic Front "Cause For Alarm"

    05/03/2023 Duration: 01h29min

Agnostic Front’s second album divided their Hardcore following due to its obvious Metal leanings but these inclinations brought in the Metal kids as the two crowds increasingly began to blend.  Before long “Cause For Alarm” would be heralded as a classic in their catalog and along with releases by SOD, DRI, COC and Suicidal Tendencies would come to define the Crossover genre.  Today it sounds distinctly of a time and that time kicked ass.     RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening    Live At CBGB https://open.spotify.com/album/2p0TGP7SKEKa5n8PkzY12A?si=HYYBBgshS-a4R-x7ZYPpng   Movie The Godfathers of Hardcore http://thegodfathersofhardcore.com   huntsmanhill.com huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7

    26/02/2023 Duration: 01h22min

We spent last episode Shoegazing and this week we’re tripping in our bucket hats all the way to Madchester to talk about The Charlatans 1990 debut.   Known in the States for the bands lone radio hit,  “The Only One I Know,” the band was a smash in their native England where a full blown scene of drug taking, baggy clothes wearing, dancing to the break of dawn Brits was sweeping the nation.  The Charlatans, along with with The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, The Happy Mondays & 808 State were the soundtrack.  But how does this stuff hold up today?  Pretty damn well actually.       Recommended Listening    Inspiral Carpets  https://open.spotify.com/artist/66GWpx9iLxrvvfhDsG9STP?si=MLlUJKyVQpmXOv2qWpi49w   808 State “Cubik" https://open.spotify.com/track/5BxETnZ8Dzm86jcuFAozOa?si=6fb3e5628aa1484c   Happy Monday Bummed  https://open.spotify.com/album/6e6DI3muL90IC1LESBo7wK?si=WmKkVMnSTpGcx7P5YANJOw   Ned’s Atomic Dustbin God fodder https://open.spotify.com/album/3jkqrE3ycfEY8088IZXcZZ?si=hOvoDFPYQHiotJMt8Q

  • EP210: Ride "Nowhere"

    19/02/2023 Duration: 01h20min

It’s 1990 in the UK for a couple of weeks on the HHPP starting with Ride’s stellar debut.  The Oxford quartet  along with My Bloody Valentine were the stalwarts for the then gestating Shoegaze scene,  but while MBV leaned more heavily into the sonic chaos of Sonic Youth, Ride drew on the psychedelia of The Stones Roses.  Regardless of shared of specific influences, each would release masterpieces at the start of the decade, starting with Nowhere.      Recommended Listening    Going Blank Again https://open.spotify.com/album/5l70cCHX1QzN680J68rblF?si=T0G9dn_VSXmBm1OHx76gcQ   Arabian Disco  https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/product/various-arabian-disco   7 Seconds Walk Together Rock Together  https://open.spotify.com/album/21CVdYp5y603h73JwAwf0N?si=-euD06vMQoWHuhUyRxkNWw   Ash https://open.spotify.com/artist/2evydP72Z45DouM4uMGsIE?si=Rt6CxOj4SoqKQAh6nc9MLA   huntsmanhill.com huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.c

    12/02/2023 Duration: 01h33min

Never Mind the Bullocks, Rocket to Russia, Animals, Low, My Aim is True, Heroes, Rumours and yes, Aja all came out in 1977 and Television’s Marquee Moon might be the best of all of them.  It's punk but atmospheric, arty but accessible, full of attitude but emotional, catchy but virtuosic.  It’s the masterpiece that hides in the shadows, sneaks up on you and then stays with you for the rest of your life.  We find a variety of ways to express this sentiment over and over again for an hour and half.  Enjoy!     RIP Tom Verlaine  RIP Bob N
