Two Pauls, One Show

It's time for the Pauls to go back to the listener request pile! Next in the queue, My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss, a request from Cousin Mark. All of the episodes are available on YouTube in poor quality. The Pauls decide to jump right to the finale before backtracking to perhaps the funniest clip from the show. What will they think of the show? Will Paul remember to tell us what he is doing with his hands? In any event, this is the most intelligent discussion about My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss...ever. It's about time someone makes a TV show about a white male antihero! The Pauls check out The Punisher, one of Netflix's many successful Disney shows. First, they talk movies. Paul watched Logan, while Paul watched Ladybird. Then, a new feature on the show: This Week in Tech with Dan L. Dan is skeptical about the Amazon health care idea, but enthusiastic about Elon Musk's flamethrower. Before the Pauls watch The Punisher, Paul has to explain to Paul about the inevitable Disney streaming platform that will arrive in the next few years. Finally, Paul and Paul fulfill an old promise and watch an episode of Narcos. First, the Pauls fill each other in on a few movies they've seen recently. And both Pauls discuss the videos they are showing their young children. Then the Pauls turn their attention to that sweet white powder: cocaine. Will they enjoy the episode? Does Luis Guzman steal the show? Will Paul recognize Pedro Pascal from Game of Thrones? And what is Paul doing with his hands? Next week: The Punisher

Paul introduces Paul to Netflix's Black Mirror, and the two watch "The Entire History of You," from season 1. SPOILER ALERT: From minute 21, key plot points of the episode are discussed. First, some reflections on the infamous New Years Eve episode AND the triumphant return of the pre-show quiz! Note: We're still working out the kinks of the new recording equipment. Happy Holidays! In the spirit of the season, the Pauls watch a show about serial killers and criminal psychology in the 1970s. Before they get to Mindhunter, they recount their most recent viewing of Home Alone, marveling at Chris Columbus's directing. Speaking of directors, David Fincher is a good one. He's the brains behind Mindhunter. After watching the first episode, Paul gets a little brainy, leaving Paul to calm him down. Next episode: a surprise!

In the background, you might just be able to make out the sounds of a conversation about Mosaic, an intriguing new show from Steven Soderbergh and HBO. First, the Pauls discuss last week's filthy episode and share their current favorite gif. Then Paul, who did the lion's share of the prep for this podcast, fills us in on the concept before Paul muses on Soderbergh's career as a whole. The Pauls dive into the app for a little over 30 minutes before returning for their reflections. Is it as cool as it sounds? More importantly, is it any good? The Pauls take another trip to the movies to see Thor: Ragnarok. Before they head into the theaters, they talk briefly about their expectations. Paul Coir promises to explain his personal connection to this film...a promise he subsequently fails to keep. After the film, the Pauls compare Ragnarok to Guardians of the Galaxy and place this Thor within the Marvel universe. Then they muse on Ragnarok's connection to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. What does Ragnarok do that Force Awakens doesn't? Most importantly, the Pauls find plenty of time to praise one of Jeff Goldblum's greatest performances. Next episode: American Vandals! Paul has a bad case of conjunctivitis (or is it MERELY pink eye?), so he phones this one in. I've heard of Twenty One Pilots but choosing 2 out of 4 sitcom pilots to watch and review on a podcast?!?! Paul gives Paul 4 vague descriptions of 4 new network sitcoms, and Paul picks two to watch and discuss. The good news is, he picks two very good shows! The bad news is, at best, it looks like only one of the two shows is going to be renewed. Also, the Pauls debut a brand new theme song. And...has Paul learned his lesson about not giving Paul a snack heading into the 2nd half of the podcast? You'll find out... But first, one Paul does 5 minutes of research, while the other re-watches 10 minutes of Eastbound and Down. Do the Pauls even like Danny McBride? Is anything in Vice Principals as funny as Will Ferrell's Eastbound and Down outtakes? In his still unsuccessful quest to find a television comedy Paul loves, Paul tries a different type of show with Nathan for You. They watch "Santa/Petting Zoo" (season 1, episode 2) and "The Movement" (season 3, episode 3). But first, the Pauls discuss the disappointments of a few recent evenings they spent together. Andy Sandberg's HBO sports mockumentary, Tour de Pharmacy, was not one of those disappointments. Paul suggests Nathan for You might be the best reality show on television. Curb Your Enthusiasm is back! To celebrate, Pauls ditch their plans to watch Narcos and, instead, Paul shows Paul two of the best episodes of the series. First, as a warm up, the Pauls watched Seinfeld's season 7 finale, "The Invitations," the last episode Larry David wrote before departing the series. Paul learns some disturbing news about Paul's feelings for Seinfeld. Then the Pauls watch season 4, episode 6, "The Carpool Lane," followed by season 3, episode 8, "Krazee Eyez Killa," two of Paul's favorite episodes of the series. Will Paul like Curb Your Enthusiasm? SPOILER ALERT!: The 2nd half of this episode discusses the allegorical meaning and key plot points from mother! although it tiptoes around descriptions of particularly graphic content. Two Pauls, One Show twitter contest winner and Darren Aronovsky's #1 fan, Maarten Jacobs, joins the Pauls on the podcast to preview and then REview one of the most divisive films...certainly of the week...mother! The three discuss the proper punctuation of the film, as well as much more information than Dr. Paul is interested in knowing. Paul explains his preferred film viewing method; it involves being kidnapped to the theater. Next, Maarten challenges both Pauls to a pre-show quiz, and you won't belive who wins! Then Maarten shares the director's statement on the film, but only after Paul leaves the room. Paul finally shows Paul The Wire! But first, Apple product expert Paul Coir offers a brief report on the new iPhones. Then Dr. Paul runs through his annual Emmy Snubs and Flubs! Also, the show welcomes a new sponsor! Before the Pauls watch the show, Paul runs Paul through a round of "Cop-Drug Dealer-Drug User" in the Pre-Show Quiz.
