    04/11/2011 Duration: 01h33min

Carolyn Brent travels throughout the United States lecturing about the importance of adult siblings and parents having what she calls “crucial conversations” in preparation for the end-of-life issues they may face, so that instead of being torn apart, they can come together as a strong family. She is committed to enhancing the lives of family caregivers and their aging parents throughout the world. Carolyn’s passion for her subject started when she was caring for her own father, who was diagnosed with dementia in 1997. From that experience, she found that neither she nor her family truly understood not only the medical challenges related to aging and chronic illness, but also the financial and emotional weight that these bring to bear on a family. In 2009, she founded her business Grandpa’s Dream and the non-profit organization Caregiver Story for the dissemination of information through books, speaking engagements and a web-based info portal, with the hopes of them becoming instruments of positive change

  • WANDERING EXPLORERS - PRACTICAL DEMENTIA

    08/09/2011 Duration: 01h50min

Dr. Doug Wornell, Geriatric Psychiatrist is the Author of "Wandering Explorers - A Practical Dementia for Families and Caregivers" This show will offer you a great opportunity to call in and ask Dr. Wornell a question. Below is a peak at Dr. Wornell's philosophy- “Wandering Explorers” is a term Dr.Wornell, uses for those with moderate to severe dementia. It suggests a cognitive limitation and yet notes a purpose in behavior and activity. As with children, we have a responsibility to see that these “Explorers” are as content and healthy as possible. Dementia care requires no less sensitivity or sophistication of care than that in the management of children. After acceptance, we can find other important ways to manage patients with dementia. Some of these are minimizing medication, maximizing appropriate social stimulation, and continuously being prepared for change.Support this Show: https://alzheimersspeaks.com/donate-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
