Debate This!

Synopsis

Debate This! is a podcast where grown men argue about video games and comics like kids on a playground. Each episode, hosts Matt Cole, Kyle Harper, Andrew Henderson, and Todd Thomas will debate meaningless topics, like which of Dr Robotnik's inventions could have been a legitimate investment, or which of the Koopa Kids should be in line for the crown. In this show, no one is right, but someone is definitely wrong.

  • FLAVOR TEXT: Flavor Text Wrap Up (Pt 2)

    27/12/2023 Duration: 01h15min

Early last year, we took stock of all the FLAVOR TEXT episodes we had recorded by that time and sorted them all in a tier list, which resulted in The Witcher being our most favorite and Kingdom Hearts our least. Now with 20+ more under our belt, we're doing that all over again by both ranking this new batch separately and then together with the first batch. The second batch of FTs ranked: https://imgur.com/a/ULWskUE All FTs up-to-date ranked: https://imgur.com/a/1DuNCIt If you'd like to commission your own FLAVOR TEXT and see your chosen media hopefully beat out Amory Wars, check out our Patron page at patreon.com/debatethiscast. • Ep. 135: Set Phasers to Pizza

    19/12/2023 Duration: 01h09min

Happy Winter Season of Non-Denominational Holiday Celebration™ to all of you who celebrate non-denominationaly! Happy Tuesday™ to those of you who don't! It's time for our final debate of the year and our annual shitty peripheral gift exchange! Unfortunately, DT!HQ is a little short on budget this year, so we decided to exchange gifts with the local pawn shop as opposed to each other. So today we've gathered together to decide on the best video game peripheral to sell to a pawn shop? Matt brought a plank of wood. Andrew brought a slice of Pizza. Todd brought an oldie that is most certainly also a goodie. • FLAVOR TEXT: Killing God With The Power Of Friendship

    12/12/2023 Duration: 01h09min

We make the joke all the time that the most common trope of any anime, JRPG, or many other Japanese-created media is to ultimately kill God with the Power of FriendshipTM. But, why is that? Thanks to #buttthwompnation member "@Sharkbait" we present to you a liberal college-level course that answers that question with 2,000+ years of real-world Japanese history! • Ep. 134: Grumpy Matt's Worst Christmas Ever

    05/12/2023 Duration: 57min

The weather outside is getting frightful, but the fire is getting oh so delightful...Or that's how these show notes would have started if we actually recorded a holiday episode. Instead, we recorded an episode about Made-For-TV-Movies and what it would be like if we made those into video games. Just to be clear, no one picked the Made-For-TV-Movie you wanted them to. Nope, not even that one. Kyle is created the worst (best?) ever modern farming sim. Andrew wrote a script. Todd's main character has a lot of names and that's really all there is to remember about his answer. The title of this week's episode was NOT selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community because we didn't want to spoil the bit! If you love Silicon Valley, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and dunking on failed videogame industry tropes, then we have a show (and FLAVORTEXT) for you! Thanks to friend of the show, Deb, for allowing us the opportunity to talk about this very fun show and for making Matt inject multiples seasons of an Apple+ show into is life over the course of a long weekend. • Ep. 133: Solve for XP

    14/11/2023 Duration: 01h03min

Two and a half years ago, we created a bit in which Todd, Kyle and Matt act as Andrew's collective dads in a Final Fantasy world. Then, a year and a half ago, we revisited this concept a second time. WELL, everyone knows you can't have a trilogy without a third entry. So today we welcome back Sad Dad, Bad Dad and Rad Dad for another Final Fantasy episode! This time we're asking the age old questions, which Final Fantasy location would be the best place to retire? Matt introduces the family to his entrepreneurial dreams. Todd discusses the dad-tastic urge to visit historical battlefields. Kyle makes the required Heavensward joke. • Ep. 132: An Exercise in Practicing Restraint

    07/11/2023 Duration: 01h03min

You know what? It's been a minute since the last time we attempted to save the DC Cinematic Universe. That said, it's only been about three weeks since the last time we "made a series like Disney Plus's Loki." Well, for some reason, we've decided to recapture both of the aforementioned magics and save the DC Cinematic Universe with a series like Disney Plus's Loki! This week we're asking the simple question, "Which DC Villain should lead their own limited run series that isn't Peacemaker or Harley Quinn?" Andrew threw all of his creativity out the window for this episode and that's all we'll say about that. Matt speaks to the primal urge of man that is de-handling panhandles. Big wheels keep on turning and train whistles keep on blowing! It's Week 3 of Spooktacular Express Season and this week we're reviving those classic, Universal movie monsters. If you're a long time listener to DT!, you've probably heard the phrase "metal dracula" before. Well, for the first time since Season 1, we're back with that same, dumb energy. There's no stops on this week's monster mashup, even though someone should have stopped Andrew before he rewrote Phantom of the Opera as a Glee episode. Todd brings the stickiest answer to the party this week while also making more puns than your body has room for. Matt talks about 70 year old monster lore and no one needed that. Join us today as we take a deep dive into the psychological horror known as Emesis Blue - a full 100+ minute movie made using assets from Team Fortress 2 by Fortress Films. • Ep. 130: Spooky Sacks of 90s Stuff

    03/10/2023 Duration: 01h04min

*Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express time y'all! Gear up for our month-long, Halloween-themed content adventure as we bored the train for a Goosebumps land! That's right listener, we're reaching deeper into the Scholastic Book Fair well to create semi-spooky horror games. The goal this week is to create the best possible video game adaptation of a classic Goosebumps tale. Nobody tell R.L. Stine, but these games have just as much to do with the source material as their covers used to. The Spooktacular Express makes a few stops in spooky locations this week. Matt requested the conductor to drop him off at a spooky, secret amusement park deep in the forest. Todd's doing a time travel thing in a big spooky tower. Meanwhile, Kyle reboots the very first Goosebumps book, or is it the first season of American Horror Story? • Ep. 129: Live, Laugh, Lekgolo

    19/09/2023 Duration: 50min

Workers' rights and labor unions have been dominating the headlines in the US for the last few months. While that is probably the most culturally relative sentence we've ever put in our shownotes, it is also the sentence that inspired today's dumb bit. In an effort to prove that we are, in fact, a pro-union podcast, we're helping video game characters organize. So settle in for your union-mandated break and listen along as we answer the question "What group of video game characters should be the next to unionize?" All three answers today force us to define what a "manager" is. Todd talks more about Voltron than you'd expect. Andrew is really committing to a bit within a bit. Kyle comes to the table to represent the population of our favorite sovereign nation. • FLAVOR TEXT: The Dark Tower

    12/09/2023 Duration: 01h36min

In the early 2000s, Stephen King listened to Lou Bega's Mambo No. 5 so much that his wife, who stuck by his side through decades of alcohol and drug use, almost left him. It is with that same fervor that King wrote the topic of today's flavor text The Dark Tower. King's eight and a half book epic follows the strong but silent Roland Deschart across the All-World and the Stephen King Extended Universe as he makes his way to The (titular) Dark Tower, and his destiny. Along the way our hero kills a kid, fights Lobstrosities and...well you'll just have to listen to the episode. Special thanks to dear friend of the show just generally fantastic human being "Pflum" for commissioning this month's episode! 05/09/2023 Duration: 55min

It should come as no surprise to you, dear listener, that DT!HQ is a pet-friendly office. We've hosted a few pet shows here in the office, but last year, the DT! No Bummers Program Committee hosted a dog show like no Thanksgiving Day has ever seen. Well the DT!NBPC is back at it, but dogs are so 2000 and late. This year, we're hosting a cat show in hopes of determining which cat is the best cat in all of video games! Kyle brought a low-hanging, albeit delicious fruit that will surprise absolutely no one. Matt is the wild card this week. Andrew's answer will make you think about Food Network way more than you're ready for. Hey, do you guys remember Secret Invasion? That Marvel show with Samuel L Jackson and Daenerys Targaryen? Yeah, that one! Well it just came out in July and all four of us watched it. Not only did we watch it, but tens of other people watched it as well. So, in honor of this massive smash hit about shape shifting aliens, the debaters are here to pitch some new games. This week we're asking, "Which video game sequel would be ...better?... with shape shifting Skrulls?" Matt is here to test your tolerance for collectathons as well as puns. If you've listened to this podcast for more than a few weeks, you've probably heard at least one of our hosts complain about common RPG elements like turn-based combat and complex menuing. Maybe you agree with those complaints, or maybe you don't, but one thing is for sure, the garden-variety "JRPGs" just aren't for everyone.
