Rich White Woman

Can you decolonise your mind? Is that a thing that is even possible? Why does every single media show, either explicitly or subtly that "white is right", or at least that "white is righter"? If you've grown up with this all of your life, in a society that tells itself that its white achievements don't have a black history then what does that do to you and how you view yourself? In this final episode of the season I talk about, how to "decolonise your mind", not because it's a cute thing to talk about, but because we need to do it. All of us.

I wish I knew what it was like to know what it's like to have the world made for you. It must be nice to know that wherever you go, you're home even if you're not actually AT home, you'll always belong. Well, I've never had that, and it largely didn't worry me, until it did and then it really did. What was it like growing up queer, brown and in one of the most "disadvantaged" postcodes in Melbourne? Yeah it was fine, it was fucking cool actually. I didn't have a problem with it, other people had a problem with me and that became a huge problem for me, intolerable and unbearable. In this episode I go to the movies, in fact, maybe not the movies but rather the movie, a movie: Paris is Burning. The movie gives me life not just because it's truly amazing but it's the one film where I see all the issues I care, feel and think about represented and celebrated in 75 minutes. I also talk about what's the deal when people of colour create something but it doesn't become a "thing" until the white people do it. Listen in.

What's it like being an UnAustralian Australian? It's not easy, but it's also kind of beautiful. in this episode I discuss the one question that I absolutely HATE and LOATHE more than any other. That question: "Where are you from?". I also go on a bit of a rant about a lot of things, Aboriginal sovereignty being one of them... Am I angry? Where are all the brown people on television? Sure it's fine if we are cab drivers or cleaners or terrorists or mail order brides but- really? Is that all we can look forward to? When I was growing up, there was only one place where I saw people that look like me on equal footing with white people. Just one... Why is it like this and why don't we talk about this more?
