  • Will having the flu impact on my running performance? Ask Coach Parry 9

    27/03/2014 Duration: 04min

TalkFEED — Today’s question comes from Lennard Van Wyk:Hey Lindsey, just would like to ask your opinion about my training: I am currently running 6 days a week. I average about 70-80kms per week. I take all runs easy at 5:50 min/km. I only push hard on Tuesdays when we have time trials, my times are 39min for 8km. Then weekends I only run on Saturdays, and rest Sundays. The Saturdays are long runs, I combine a half marathon with some extra kms. I also run them relatively slower. Since start of January I have never done less that 25km on a Saturday, and I have done 2 runs of 30kms prior to the Deloitte Marathon. So what I want to know is, yesterday went really bad, I was just so tired at 19km, I had no energy. I pushed on, and managed to finish 4:41. But this was quiet a struggle. Now I need to add that two weeks ago, I had a little bit of flu, nothing serious, and last week, the week prior to Deloitte, I didn’t get much sleep as my son was born Sunday a week ago. So should I blame the lack of sleep and t

  • What workout can you replace a hill repeat session with?

    25/03/2014 Duration: 03min

TalkFEED — Today’s question comes from Tracey Muller:Hi Lindsey, thank you for the informative (albeit terrifying!) talk in East London. I have a quick query….as you mentioned all of our runs here are pretty hilly and I’m considering easing up on formal hill repeats due to the injury risk. What sort of distance (or time) run should I do instead to replace the hill session? I’ve been following your bronze training programme. Also with regards to strength training, have I left it too late to benefit from regular strength training or is it still worthwhile to fit in a few sessions a week? (It will unfortunately be starting from scratch!).If you have a question you would like us to answer, please feel free to ask it on our brand new forum. • Is the Gradient and Pace of My Hill Repeats Too Steep and Too Fast?

    21/03/2014 Duration: 04min

TalkFEED — Today’s question comes from Carla Sieberhagen:Hi Lindsay, for the hill repeats I am running a hill that covers 350m up the hill in 2 minutes. The elevation gain is about 20m. So this would be a grade of about 6%. I battle to maintain a steady pace for all the repeats and I am really out of breath even after the first two repeats. Is the grade to steep? At what pace compared to your marathon race pace should you be doing repeats. Thank you. If you would like to read the transcript, click here.If you have a question you would like us to answer, please feel free to ask it on our brand new forum. • Running Shoes - How much mileage should you get out of a pair?

    17/03/2014 Duration: 04min

TalkFEED — The first episode of the Ask Coach Parry Podcast sees us answer a question from Dewald Bothma:I’m running my back-to-back Comrades Marathon this year but have noticed that I’m getting very low mileage on my shoes. I am a neutral runner and run in Asics Cumulus. At best I get around 500km but I am on 350km at the moment and it feels like they aren’t giving me any support, whatsoever. I am 1.94m tall and weigh just under 100kg. I realise I am not a light (or short) runner and this must affect my shoes too?My question is which shoes you would recommend I run in – so I get maximum mileage, but also so I run with shoes that are best for my height/weight (in terms of preventing injuries, etc)?If you would like to read the transcript of this interview, click here.If you have a question you would like us to answer, please feel free to ask it on our brand new forum.
