Regular Joes Podcast

In an effort to break their streak of epic length episodes the Dave, Barry and Tod forgo their normal format and cover a wide and varying range of random topics. One might call it, "the episode about nothing," but then that's probably appropriate for most week's offerings. This installment also features "What's in the Box" as well as a Friday the 13th edition of "Who Would Win in a Fright."

In another epic length episode the Regular Joe's expound at length on the Edge of Tomorrow (see it now!) and cover the film career of Tom Cruise as a whole. WARNING this episode contains SPOILERS and occasional bouts of gushing over Tom Cruise. Seriously, at one point the word "man crush" is even dropped. The guys pick their respective favorite and least favorite Tom Cruise films and pit one Tom Cruise character against another in Who Would Win in a Fight. Stay tuned after the sign off. This episode contains our longest outro to date.  

The Regular Joes hit the big Five-0 (episodes that is) and to celebrate, Dave, Barry and Tod try something  a bit different.  They discuss all of the core topics that make up the show (movies, toys, TV, comics, collecting, superheroes and sci-fi) and do a round-robin style discussion of each topic... with a time limit.  5 minutes per round.  Does it work? Listen and find out.  Also in this episode, Show and Tell and Desert Island DVD’s featuring movies celebrating their 5-0, all from 1964.   

With 2 established movie franchises slugging it out for box office revenue the Regular Joes give their take on Godzilla and X-Men Days of Future's Past. How to these new offerings stand up against their predecessors?   With 7 X-films, 30 Godzilla attacks, and, to be kind, less then consistent track records, do these franchises still have appeal? WARNING: this episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS. Also, Random Topics and reflections and remembrances of the late Don Levine.    

As the 2013-2014 TV season winds to a close Barry, Dave and Tod provide in-depth analysis of what new TV shows made the grade and which failed to deliver. They also talk about what they are looking forward to over the summer, and what sounds promising among the upcoming fall shows.  In the final installment of X-Memories the Joe's review and recap X-Men Origins Wolverine (2009) and X-Men First-Class (2011)  Also: Random Topics and the first, and maybe only, edition of Desert Island TV Series.

The Amazing Spider-Man II is top dog, or . . . spider at the box office, and Barry, Dave and Tod weigh in on the web-slingers's fifth big screen outing. How does the sequel stand up to its predecessors? And, how does Spider-man, once the brightest Jewel in Marvel's crown, fare in a movie market littered with Marvel’s other properties. Also, various random topics, our third X-Memories installment (X-Men: The Last Stand) and a "Long Box" segment with no mention of superheroes.    

In a virtual group therapy session for licensed collectable junkies, the Regular Joes discuss their fondness for (and some might say obsession with,) Hot Toys, Master Replicas and similar products. Also, Dave reminisces about the late Bob Hoskins, various random topics, What’s in the Box, and the X2 installment of our ongoing X-Memories movie recap.

With two successful Star Trek films revitalizing the franchise Barry, Dave and Tod make their respective pitches for Star Trek's return to the small screen. Dave gives a rundown of his recent visit to AwesomeCon, and a recent opportunity to get up close with director John Favreau. With X-Men Days of Future Past drawing near the Joe's discuss X-Men (2000) in the first of a series of revisits to the prior X films. Also listener mail and more!    

As a follow up to episode 44, our show live from G.I. Joe Con 2014, we proudly present the audio from the podcast panel we participated in at G.I. Joe Con along with the cast of the What’s on Joe Mind Podcast.  It’s one more week of G.I. Joe goodness before we get back to all of the other goings-on in the geek-a-sphere.    

This week Barry, Dave and Tod journeyed to the great state of Texas, stood on the Grassy Knoll, ate massive quantities of BBQ and attended G.I. Joe's 50th Birthday party at the International G.I. Joe Collectors Club's annual convention. In addition to the Joe's impression of the event are interviews with Club Director Brian Savage, Director of Creative Services Lanny Latham, and Kirk Bozogian, one of the people responsible for the enduring legacy of G.I. Joe.

As a follow up episode 34, we discuss our reactions to the events of the most recent episode of Agents of Shield and how it ties into Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Marvels Studios delivers another hit with Captain America The Winter Soldier and Barry, Dave & Tod get together for in depth post film analysis. WARNING: this episode includes spoilers, excessive comic book references, and may result in a uncontrollable urge to purchase action figures and or movie props. Also Show and Tell, a handful of Random Topics, and a nod to nerd deity Wil Wheaton.    

Once the exclusive haven of geeks and fans of fantasy literature, George R. R. Martin's Westeros has become a mainstream destination. Barry, Dave, and Tod discuss the popularity of HBO's Game of Thrones, the differences between the novels and the HBO series, and what will happen when the source material inevitably runs out. Barry brings home a prize he has been pursuing more than a decade, prompting a discussion of what remains on our respective lists of collector's "holy grails." What's in the Box, plus an outro by geek troubadours Paul and Storm.

With scarcely any signs of spring in sight the Regular Joe's have already turned their attention to the movies of summer. Will Marvel, with the powerful troika of Capt. America, Spiderman, and the X-Men sequels sweep this blockbuster season? Or will a certain green monster (who is not the Hulk) come out on top? Predictions and prognostications galore, as well as What's in the Box and another round of Who Would Win in a Fight.

You know that show, the one you watch and really kind of enjoy, the one you almost never talk about with your friends? This episode is all about the "Guilty Pleasures" as Barry, Dave and Tod own up to the movies and TV shows they find entertaining, and often oddly addicting, in spite of not belonging to the intended demographic. And so we ask, Is it ok to watch chick flicks . . . just for the chicks? Also, What's in the Box, several minutes of Jamie Alexander worship and a plethora of random topics.

In 1964 Hasbro introduced G.I. Joe, America's Movable Fighting Man, and the Action Figure was born. As fans of G.I. Joe gear up to recognize their plastic hero's golden anniversary, controversy, Joe's frequent companion, one again makes an appearance. Is Hasbro giving Joe his due? Dave, Barry and Tod the Regular Joes are joined by Justin Bell from the What's on Joe Mind podcast to talk it out. Also, a salute to the late great Harold Ramis with movie picks, and another round of Who Would Win in a Fight. Yo Joe!      

With equal measures of awe and admiration the Regular Joes, Barry, Dave and Tod examine the evolving role of women in Science Fiction TV and films. Was Star Trek, with it's space receptionist, really all that forward looking? Or was it Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner who's similar progressions from victim to bad ass, paved the way for Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck and Fringe's Olivia Dunham. Also What's in the Box, and Desert Island DVD's.   

Get yourself a bowl of Quisp or Count Choclula and join The Regular Joes for a look back at the Saturday morning  cartoons of the seventies and early eighties. What holds up today, and what seems inexorably tied to its era. Is it just nostalgia or were the cartoons of our youth somehow better than what we have today? And, for that matter, how many of the cartoons we associate with our childhoods are actually the product of an earlier time. Stockpile your guns and edged weapons, with the balance of The Walking Dead Season Four shuffling ever closer Dave, Barry and Tod discuss their own preparations for a Zombie apocalypse. In keeping with the episode theme the Regular Joes ruminate on the state of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead Comic (while attempting to remain spoiler free,) pick their respective zombie themed Desert Island DVD’s, give away a Walking Dead action figure set and reveal What’s in the Box. Plus a Jonathan Coulton song to close it all out!
