In this podcast, you will find the truths, And those truths will set you free to success. Zoot Velasco is an employee of OCEAA and California State University Fullerton. • Episode 96- Robert Santana and The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast (Part 7 of 7)

    01/06/2021 Duration: 34min

Episode 96: The list of 29 Recession Stars includes the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Central Orange Coast Foundation, an endowment for the clubs. Robert Santana is the CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs while also running their foundation. The Clubs themselves did well during the recession but were already too large in 2008 to be part of my study of Recession Stars. They continued to grow like a juggernaut after the recession. The foundation was the Recession Star and the only one of its kind. It grew substantially during the recession, helping both organizations grow. The foundation went from $142,000 in 2008 to $463,000 in 2012. By 2018 it grew to just over $1 million. That is a 725% growth building an endowment for the clubs. When you hear Robert speak, you can see why they had such growth. I was able to host Robert as a speaker at our conference on leadership in 2019, rebroadcast for you here.

  • Episode 95- Creative Solutions and Ryan Cargando (Part 6 of 7)

    01/06/2021 Duration: 16min

Episode 95: Dr. Ryan Cargando of Creative Solutions in Riverside, CA started his foster care agency with $400,000 of his own money to create better-quality services for the families with whom he worked as a social worker. By the beginning of the recession in 2008, he had already grown to $1.5 million with contracts in several counties, but his quality programs, networks, and training helped him continue to grow. Even though his agency was over a million-dollar organization, I included him because his growth was so new and rapid. Just a year earlier he was under a million dollars. By the end of the recession in 2012, he more than doubled with $3.3 million in earnings. By 2018, when my study ended, he led a $4.1 million organization. That's over 271% growth during the worst years of our economy. His story of mission and calling out of tragedy is quite inspiring. I’ll let you hear it for yourself.

  • Episode 94- Solidarity with Tommy Nixon & Kevin Mo-Wong (Part 5 of 7)

    01/06/2021 Duration: 23min

Solidarity is one of the 29 Recession Star organizations that grew from small to large with surprising success against the backdrop of the Great Recession.  The organization started at $156, 000 in 2008 and grew to $645, 000 by 2012, as the recession came to a close. That is a 419% growth! By 2018, they had reached the million-dollar mark. In total, this is a 642% growth overall. I interviewed Tommy Nixon, founding CEO, and Kevin Mo-Wong, who helped found the organization as second-in-command, and now leads Solidarity as its current Executive Director.

  • Episode 93- Anne Olin & Charitable Ventures (Part 4 of 7)

    01/06/2021 Duration: 30min

Episode 93: Charitable Ventures, led by Anne Olin, went from a newly-minted organization in 2008 with a budget of just $193,000 at the beginning of the recession to $1.2 million in 2012 at the end of the recession. That's a 624% increase during the great recession when organizations all over the country were shrinking.  Then, they jumped to $7.5 million in 2018 when I concluded my study. That's a total of a whopping 3,880% growth, and that's not all. They're still growing to this day. How did they do it?
