Debate This!

Synopsis

Debate This! is a podcast where grown men argue about video games and comics like kids on a playground. Each episode, hosts Matt Cole, Kyle Harper, Andrew Henderson, and Todd Thomas will debate meaningless topics, like which of Dr Robotnik's inventions could have been a legitimate investment, or which of the Koopa Kids should be in line for the crown. In this show, no one is right, but someone is definitely wrong.

  • Ep. 115: Everybody Gets Wondery

    24/01/2023 Duration: 56min

Look, everyone knows if you don't get at least 1 trillion downloads on your Season 6 premiere episode, you'll never make it in podcasting. With that in mind, we've decided to change our format up here a little bit at DT!HQ. As of right now and probably definitely forever, we're a true crime podcast! We're excited to embark on this bold, new journey. But, we also understand the value of staying in our lane. That's why we're kicking off our true crime journey by deciding what the best(?) video game crime to make a podcast about could be! Our 3 debaters all cover a different major faction of true crime. Matt's White Collar Nation lived peacefully with Andrew's Murder Nation. But everything changed when Todd and the Cult Nation attacked! This episode was sponsored by MANSCAPED! • FLAVOR TEXT: Console Wars

    17/01/2023 Duration: 02h15min

Before Xbox and Playstation were waging war in the 2000s, we were dealing with the console war version of the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The shot heard 'round the world was a simple phrase: "Sega does what Ninten-don't." We all remember the bold and edgy marketing that drew the line in the sand. Brother against brother, we all had to take a side in the console wars of the 90s, but that's not the whole picture of a story that starts years earlier. Join us today as Matt walks us through the earliest console wars in today's FLAVOR TEXT guaranteed to hit you hard right in the nostalgia bone. Special thanks to #buttthompnation member "@MGrum54," who was kind enough to give us an excuse to break out the Nintendo light gun by commissioning this episode! • Ep. 114: Atomic Purple Malarkey Maker

    10/01/2023 Duration: 01h04min

We're kicking off season 6 with a monumental task. Listen, we don't just say, "yes!" to everything that is asked of us here at ol' DT!HQ, but when your country comes a-callin', you must answer. IRL President Joey Bides dropped a line to the DT! Marketing Department to ask for help with the most patriotic of problems: The rebranding of America. That's right everyone. The Red, White, and Blue are so two thousand and late that Joey Bides wants us to pick a new color to usher forth a revitalized American Spirit. That said, he wants us to pick a color from a very specific list--the list of N64 controller colors. Welcome to the State of the DT!HQ. Set your DVR for C-SPAN as we answer the age old question: What color of N64 controller is the best? Every debate needs its chump answer, and Kyle is here to tell you it's not Atomic Purple. Andrew yearns for the absolute radness of the 1990s while he reminisces about Extreme Green. Matt plants his flag with the 99% and gives the most accessible, albeit the most boring an

  • Ep. 112: Are We Baddy or Are We Daddy?

    06/12/2022 Duration: 01h08min

In the earliest days of 2017, a new gaming style swept the nation as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds introduced the world to the Battle Royale. It wasn't long before every 10-year-old had downloaded PUBG on their parents' iPads and joined the hunt for that illusive winner winner chicken dinner. Battle Royale games pit 100 (or some other arbitrary number) players against each other to see who is the very best like, no one ever was. UNRELATED: A new Pokemon game just came out! Sure would be weird to combine those two ideas, right? Sure would be weird to ask the debaters to create the best possible Pokemon Battle Royale game, right? Matt struggles this week to determine the difference between day and night. Todd is the middleman this week as he answers the exact question that he was asked. Andrew makes a mistake, and the rest of the crew call him on it. The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! • Ep. 111: Re-Education (Through Kickflips and Guns)

    22/11/2022 Duration: 01h02min

As children of the 90s and 2000s, Millenials are intimately familiar with the concept of "Edutainment." In an attempt to meet the kids where they were, educators tried their hardest to develop games where the real plot was the lessons we learned along the way. Weirdly, around the same time, video games got real gray and gritty. Wouldn't it be wild if you smashed those two concepts together? Wouldn't it?   Andrew unlocks the vault of controversial video games and pulls Postal 2 from its depths. Todd checks the Sonic box and makes sure we all know what our hedgehog personas look like. Kyle makes us all very uncomfortable as we explore religious trauma together. What more could you possibly want when we ask, "What gritty game would make the best Edutainment game?" • DLC EPISODE: Video Game Creepypastas Vol. 6

    08/11/2022 Duration: 57min

"I think I can! I think I can! I think I can!" said the Spooktacular Express as we willed it deeper into November for one more stop! We're wrapping up our Halloween-themed journey with a fan-favorite tradition, Creepypasta Story Time. If this is your first time seeing one of our Creepypasta episodes in your feed, please allow me to explain. Creepypastas are spooky internet stories. Some are good, some are bad, some are just absolutely bananas. Every scary season, the DT! guys sit around a digital zoom campfire and tell each other these stories, for better or for worse! This year, Andrew tells us the horrors of retro tech, Todd gives us a cult warning, and Matt talks about comics. Keep scrolling to find links to these stories near the bottom of the shownotes! Because we have extended the Spooktacular Express, so too have we extended the Spooktacular Bonus! You have until November 15th to slap the roof of these sweet deals! • DLC EPISODE: Night of the Living Dontcha Know!

    01/11/2022 Duration: 03h01min

Happy Halloween if you're to the left of the Eastern Time Zone and happy November first to the rest of you! This is typically the last stop on the Spooktacular Express, but as you'll hear in this episode, we're exteding the spookems for a few extra weeks. Last Halloween we recorded a very special DnD one-shot episode that transported us to Minnesota to fight through a zombie apocalypse! That spooky adventure has been locked behind our Patreon paywall for a year, but much like an infectious zombie virus, it escaped! Even if you're not an avid listener of our actual-play show The Office Drones, or actual-play podcasts in general, we promise this episode will be worth the listen just to hear how the DT! guys handle the end of the world. Imgur Album of all the incredibly-specific pictures of Baudette, MN and surrounding areas: https://imgur.com/a/JMrcy6Z A very special thanks to Bella of The Stephen Queens Podcast for lending her voice talents to us in this episode! • The Office Drones DX: Book 2

    25/10/2022 Duration: 04h26min

As the Spooktacular Express pulls out of its final Rainforest Cafe for the year, the DT! crew wanted to take time to reflect on the journeys we taken together and the friends we made along the way--exclusively related to our Patreon-exclusive D&D real-play podcast, The Office Drones! That's right, it's time for a clip show, baybee. Continuing the tradition of last year's supercut of the first five episodes and the introductory Episode 0, please enjoy this second Director's Cut version of the Marketing arc, which represents Episodes 6-10. If you don't know what this is and a D&D real-play podcast featuring real-life office employees fighting D&D monsters with JIRA tickets and HR benefits summaries sounds like nonsense, then check out the first of this Director's Cut series originally uploaded in November 2021 titled "The Office Drones DX: Book 1." And, if you like this and want to hear more, please consider subscribing to our Patreon at $5/month for access to all current and backlogged episodes of

  • Ep. 110: He's Coming for Your Juuls

    18/10/2022 Duration: 01h02min

*Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express week 3 and we're getting High Concept. There aren't many better (betterier?) ways to celebrate spooky season than curling up with your boo for a scary slasher flick. We've produced plenty of movies here at DT!HQ but none of them have been slashers. Opportunity knocked and we answered with web-based, stick figure-centric, flash game-inspired pitches to decide which flash game would make the best kitschy slasher movie! Todd comes in strong but it doesn't take long for him to pizza himself into a bad time. Matt has a bone to pick with 2001's Donnie Darko. Kyle sets a new record for longest walk on shortest pier which, on this show, is honestly the most impressive thing.   We made a lot of new friends this weekend at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo! If you're one of those new friends, welcome! Also, the show notes keep going, keep scrolling. • FLAVOR TEXT: Pokémania

    11/10/2022 Duration: 01h19min

In September 1998, the U.S. was introduced to the franchise that would soon become a worldwide phenomenon: Pokémon. After only 18 months, Pokémon was everywhere--on TV, in car CD players, in school cafeterias, and on kids' backpacks and bedsheets. You couldn't walk 5 feet inside a Kmart and not see something with Pikachu's likeness on it. How did this come about? Why, all of a sudden, was every child aged 7-14 suddenly screaming for their parents in to buy them booster pack upon booster pack of Pokémon cards in the summer of 1999? And, why oh God why is there a Pokémon Christmas album? Find out the answers to all these questions and more on our deep dive into the late 90s cultural phenomenon that was Pokémania. Special thanks to our first-generational Pokémon Master, "@mgrum54" for commissioning today's episode. • Ep. 109: Every Kill Begins with Kay

    04/10/2022 Duration: 01h04min

*Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express time y'all! Gear up for our month-long, Halloween-themed content adventure as we bored the train for a mythical mall in Colorado. We may not have an almost-zombie daughter, a goblin mask, or a bunch of NPCs to escort to the safe room, but we're still talking Dead Rising. It's time to slay some zombies because this week we're trying to make the best combo weapon with a video game item and a real world thing! (Keep scrolling for some Spooktacular Patreon Info)   Andrew is on the defensive this week. Kyle may not understand how carpet works. Todd seems like he might have picked up a jewelry sponsorship but don't worry, he has to tell us. Spooktacular Review-a-thon: Step 1: Review the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, Goodpods, or anywhere else you can write reviews! Step 2: Take a screenshot of your review, post it to social media, and tag us @debatethiscast Step 3: We'll read your review in a spooky voice during the October ad breaks! If

  • FLAVOR TEXT: Completing Video Games

    27/09/2022 Duration: 01h54min

Picture this. You've dedicated hundreds of your limited hours of existence exclusively to The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild. You've cleaned out every one of the 120 shrines, you've maxed out your health and stamina, and you've found the most rare and powerful weapons. Moreover, you've explored every inch of the map and have literally overturned each and every stone in order to find all 900 Korok seeds--most of which didn't even provide material gain. But, you did it. You have done all of the things and have seen all the stuff. As you nab that 900th Korok seed, you breath a sigh of relief, saying quietly to yourself: "It's over." Triumphantly, you rush to the NPC character who originally set you off on this quest, wondering to yourself what kind of reward could possibly be in store? Maybe some super cool armor or overpowered weapon? Maybe an extra shrine or dungeon or something? You eagerly wait for the Korok's fun and silly dance to conclude, soberly aware this will be the last time you may ever see

  • Ep. 108: Big Battle Pass Energy

    20/09/2022 Duration: 01h04min

After nearly five full years, all four Debaters are actually in the same room for an episode! As a podcast that records almost exclusively remote, this was a lot of fun, but also we didn't have the best equipment for it! So with that in mind, please forgive us if the audio sounds a little different than normal. To distract you from any changes in audio quality, we decided to talk about Fortnite! Join us as we try to appease Elder God Kevin Feige and answer the question, "Which MCU character should be the focus of the next Fortnite Battle Pass?" Matt decided to talk about everyone's favorite Phase 4 film and the giant statue it introduced us to. Todd talks about a character no one even knows but definitely isn't in the MCU. Kyle's answer involves Marvel's first family and it strangely reminds us all of spaghetti.
